PSA vs BGS: Which Grading Service Is Better?
Compare PSA and BGS grading for Pokemon and sports cards — turnaround, resale value, subgrades, and when each service makes sense.
Graded cards dominate the high-end hobby. Two names come up constantly: PSA and BGS (Beckett). Both authenticate and encapsulate cards, but they serve collectors differently.
PSA — the resale standard
PSA is the most recognized grader in the mainstream market, especially for sports cards and modern Pokemon. A PSA 10 often commands the broadest buyer pool on eBay and at shows.
Best for: quick resale, widely traded modern cards, set registry collectors.
BGS — subgrades and premium gems
BGS assigns subgrades (centering, corners, edges, surface) and its prized Black Label 10 (all subgrades 10) is among the most valuable labels in the hobby.
Best for: condition-sensitive vintage, cards where subgrades tell the story, ultra-premium specimens.
Which should you choose?
| Goal | Recommendation | |------|----------------| | Fastest broad resale | PSA | | Maximum value for a perfect card | BGS Black Label chase | | Vintage with strong centering | Compare both markets for your set |
