Elly De La Cruz Cards: A Collector's Guide to Bowman, Topps Update & Chrome
Which Elly De La Cruz cards to buy — Bowman Draft Chrome prospects vs Topps rookie cards, numbered parallels, and when a PSA 10 is worth the premium.
Few young players have pulled collectors into the hobby like Elly De La Cruz. The Reds shortstop's speed and power made him an instant highlight reel after his 2023 MLB debut, and his cards followed. We have built up a real run of his cards — from early Bowman prospects to numbered Topps parallels — so here is how we think about them.
Prospect cards vs rookie cards
This is the first thing to understand with any modern baseball player:
- Bowman prospect cards are printed while a player is still in the minors. They often get an "(RC)" in eBay titles, but they do not carry the official MLB rookie card logo. Collectors chase them because they came first.
- Official rookie cards carry the RC logo and are printed after the player reaches the majors — Topps flagship, Update, Chrome, Finest and so on.
Neither is "better." Prospect cards are the early-adopter play; rookie cards are what most set builders and long-term collectors want. Many collectors end up with one of each.
The Bowman Draft Chrome #BDC-80
Elly's 2022 Bowman Draft Chrome #BDC-80 is one of his most collected prospect cards. The chrome stock shows off color and refractor patterns, and it grades well when centering is clean.
Versions we have carried include the base chrome, the Refractor, and the Sapphire Edition — Sapphire is a separate premium release with a blue-tinted finish that collectors treat as its own tier.
2024 Topps Update #US350 Rookie Debut
The Rookie Debut #US350 card from 2024 Topps Update is an affordable way into his Topps cards, and the parallels are where it gets fun. Look for:
- Serial-numbered foilboard parallels — the number on the back (like /299 or /499) is the print run. Lower numbers mean fewer copies exist.
- Gold /2024 — numbered to the year, a classic Topps parallel
- Purple Holo and other color variations
When comparing two parallels, check the print run first, then condition. A clean /299 can be a smarter buy than a worn copy of a rarer color.
Chrome and Finest
Beyond Bowman and Update, Topps Chrome Update (including RayWave refractors) and Topps Finest give you thicker chrome stock and a premium look at a lower price point than the top parallels. These are great "display" cards.
Raw or graded?
For a player with this much attention, grading matters:
- A PSA 10 sells faster and comps more cleanly than a raw copy — buyers pay for the certainty.
- A PSA 9 is often the value sweet spot on cards where 10s carry a big premium.
- Buying raw? Look hard at centering and the chrome surface — print lines and corner dings are common on chrome stock.
