'90s Hall of Fame Slabs: Brett Hull, Gary Payton, Frank Thomas & Randy Moss

Fresh '90s Hall of Famer slabs in the shop — Brett Hull PSA 10s, a Gary Payton Finest Gold, Frank Thomas Gold Rush, and a Randy Moss Bowman Chrome rookie — plus what makes each one tough.

The '90s gave us the first big wave of premium cards — foil, chrome, refractors, and parallels — and some of the best players of the decade are all over them. We just listed a group of graded Hall of Famers across hockey, basketball, baseball, and football. Here is the rundown.

Brett Hull: two PSA 10s

Hull, "the Golden Brett," was one of the great goal scorers in NHL history and went into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009. We added two gem-mint Blues-era cards:

  • 1994-95 Upper Deck Predictor Retail Gold #R57 — PSA 10. Predictor cards were Upper Deck's game cards: collectors could redeem them if the player hit a milestone. Many got handled, mailed, or tossed, so clean copies are scarce. The listing notes a PSA population of 1 at this grade.
  • 1995 Select Certified #4 — PSA 10. Pinnacle's Select Certified was a premium line with a shiny foil finish that chips and scratches easily. The listing notes a PSA population of 4 in 10.

Gary Payton: 1996 Finest Gold

"The Glove" anchored the Seattle SuperSonics defense through the '90s and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013.

  • 1996 Finest Gold #286 — PSA 8. Mid-'90s Finest was sorted into color tiers, and Gold was the rarest tier. Finest cards shipped with a peel-off protective film, and pulling it without dinging the chrome is part of why high grades are hard. A PSA 8 on a Gold is a solid way into one of Payton's tougher cards.

Frank Thomas: 1994 Score Gold Rush

"The Big Hurt" was one of the most feared hitters of the decade with the White Sox and went into Cooperstown in 2014.

  • 1994 Score Gold Rush — PSA 9. Gold Rush is Score's gold-foil parallel. Foil edges show wear quickly, so a PSA 9 is a nice grade for an early-'90s parallel.

Randy Moss: Bowman Chrome rookie

Moss burst into the NFL with the Vikings in 1998 and is a 2018 Pro Football Hall of Famer.

  • 1998 Bowman Chrome #182 rookie card — PSA 9. Bowman Chrome is one of the key Moss rookies. Chrome stock from this era is notorious for print lines and edge chipping, so a PSA 9 holds up well.

Bonus: late-'80s Mark McGwire

Not a '90s card, but they came in with this group:

  • 1988 Fleer Record Setter #629 — PSA 10
  • 1988 Star Davis & McGwire #7 — PSA 9, an oddball from the Star Company sets of the era

Late-'80s cards were printed in enormous quantities, so the story is all about condition — a 10 is the card collectors want.

Buying '90s slabs

A few things to check before you buy any card from this era:

  • Population. Look up the cert number on the grader's site to see how many copies exist at the same grade and higher.
  • Parallel vs base. Gold, Gold Rush, and refractor versions are usually much scarcer than the base card with the same number.
  • The slab itself. Make sure the label matches the card and the case isn't cracked. Our guide on how to spot fake trading cards covers what to look for.
